Noom review: the coaching outran the calorie tracker
Official site: noom.com
What we liked
- Short daily lessons that reframe why you eat the way you do
- The psychology approach stuck with us long after the logging stopped
- A genuinely supportive tone rather than a scolding one
- Food logging is folded into a bigger behaviour-change plan
What we didn't
- One of the pricier options once the trial ends
- The upsell toward add-ons and medication tracks is persistent
- The tracker itself is the weakest part of the package
Three weeks with the coach
Noom does not really want to be a calorie counter, and after three weeks we understood why. Each morning it served a five-minute lesson about habits, cravings and the small psychology of eating, and those lessons did the heavy lifting. The logging happens in the background, but the part that stayed with us was the slow rewiring of how we thought about a snack at 4pm.
The lessons, not the tracker
If you judge Noom purely as a food tracker it looks expensive and a little clunky. Judge it as a course in behaviour change with tracking attached, and the price makes more sense. The content is the product. It nudged us to notice patterns we had ignored for years, and that reframing is far harder to get from an app that only adds up your macros.
The upsell problem
The one thing that wore on us was the constant push toward more. Add-on programs, coaching tiers and medication-related tracks surface often, and it can feel like the app is always selling the next thing. None of it blocks the core experience, but anyone sensitive to that kind of nudge should go in expecting it.
Who should commit
Noom suits the person who already knows what to eat but cannot make it stick. If your barrier is behaviour rather than information, the daily lessons are worth the outlay. If you simply want a fast, accurate place to log meals, you will get better value from MyFitnessPal or Cronometer and skip the coaching you would not use.
