Six nutrition apps and supplements, each lived with for weeks before we scored it

We signed up and paid like any other US customer, then logged our own meals and took the supplements long enough to see what survived a normal week. The price column is what you would hand over, not a launch teaser.

How a brand earns its rank

We never lift bullet points off a product page. Each brand goes through the same four stages, scored on the same eleven points, before it lands anywhere on the list.

  1. 1

    We pay full price

No press accounts and no freebies. We buy the subscription or order the supplement ourselves, so what we see is exactly what you would see signing up today.

  2. 2

We live with it for weeks

An app gets at least three weeks of daily logging across busy days and slow ones. A supplement runs long enough to judge routine and how our bodies settled, not a single dose.

  3. 3

    We read the data policy

Food logs are personal. We note what each brand collects, what it shares, and which settings let you turn tracking down or off.

  4. 4

    We score on one sheet

Eleven points, applied the same way to a ten-dollar tracker and a two-hundred-dollar metabolic program, so each is judged on what it set out to do.

What stays out of the score

  • Cleansing or weight-loss claims we cannot observe across a few weeks of ordinary use.
  • App-store star averages and influencer round-ups pasted into a table.
  • Anything a brand would only show us through a paid arrangement.

Questions readers ask

Affiliate links keep the site going. If you sign up or buy through one of ours, the brand may pay us a commission. It changes nothing about the order of the list and costs you nothing extra.
We last went through it on June 6, 2026. A brand gets a fresh look whenever it changes its price, plan or formula, and the date sits in the byline on every review.
Lifesum, most of the time. It eases you in with guided plans instead of an empty diary. If you would rather not pay anything yet, the free tier of MyFitnessPal also asks very little on day one.
They do, because readers weigh them against each other when they budget for nutrition. We score each on its own terms and say plainly which problem it solves, so a greens powder is never judged as though it were a calorie tracker.
We do not publish crowd-sourced stars. Every score comes from our own desk using the product, so there is no rating pile for a brand to inflate.
We keep the list to brands we have tested properly. If a name you expected is not here, it is usually on the queue, not that we rated it badly.

Our pick, three ways

No single brand fits every eater, so here is the call depending on what you want from one.

Levels
Best overall

Levels 4.8 / 5

  • A continuous glucose monitor that turns each meal into instant feedback.
  • The app connects what you eat to how your body responds, not just calories.
  • It taught us more about our own diet in a month than years of plain logging.

Levels sits at the top because it answers a question the other apps cannot: what is this specific meal doing to me right now. That feedback loop reshaped a few of our habits within weeks. It is easily the most expensive option here, so it earns the spot on insight rather than on price.

Lifesum
Best for beginners

Lifesum 4.5 / 5

  • A clean, encouraging interface that does not bury you in numbers on day one.
  • Ready-made meal plans give you a path to follow instead of a blank diary.
  • The free tier is enough to build the habit before you decide to upgrade.

People who freeze at the sight of a calorie field tend to stay with Lifesum longer. It asks for less up front and only adds detail once you want it. For a first tracker, that gentler on-ramp matters more than any advanced feature.

Cronometer
Best value

Cronometer 4.4 / 5

  • At ten dollars a month it undercuts the headline trackers while doing more.
  • Full vitamin and mineral breakdowns the cheaper apps simply do not show.
  • A capable free plan, so upgrading is a choice rather than a wall.

If you want micronutrients and not just calories, Cronometer gives you the deepest data for the lowest monthly outlay of the six. The free version alone covers full nutrient tracking, which is why it keeps the value spot every time we revisit the list.
